"SCARBOROUGH: Phil Berg, let me bring in you here. You obviously are Ellen's attorney. This is obviously a horrible tragedy... You are hoping to prove in a court of law that the president of the United States knew about these attacks and let 3,000 people die...

PHIL BERG, ATTORNEY FOR MARIANI: I think that there is no question that President Bush knew about it... was very complicit in the events of 9/11... Joe, if you take a look at the facts of 9/11, if there was nothing to hide, why would Bush be hiding everything? He didn't want the 9/11 Commission. He has been stonewalling the 9/11 Commission. They want to extend the 9/11 Commission. The word is now that the president and the White House doesn't want to do it...

Think about it. For the events of 9/11 to have occurred, 116 governmental agencies and failsafe systems would have had to fail on that day. The odds of that happening are one in four million." More...

White House Holding Notes Taken by 9/11 Commission
Panel May Subpoena Its Summaries of Bush Briefings
By Dan Eggen
Washington Post
January 31, 2004

The White House, already embroiled in a public fight over the deadline for an independent commission's investigation of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, is refusing to give the panel notes on presidential briefing papers taken by some of its own members, officials said this week.

The standoff has prompted the 10-member commission to consider issuing subpoenas for the notes and has further soured relations between the Bush administration and the bipartisan panel. Lack of access to the materials would mean that the information they contain could not be included in a final report about the attacks. More...

A 9/11 COVER UP?
WHY WON'T BUSH COOPERATE WITH INVESTIGATORS?

Philly Daily News Editorial
Thu, Jan. 29, 2004

THE WHITE House doesn't want to give the commission investigating the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks the 60 more days that it says it needs to finish its report.

Republicans are worried that a two-month extension would inject - shudder - politics into the Sept. 11 tragedy. The report would be released in July, in the middle of the presidential campaign.

As a shocked, but unidentified Republican congressional aide told the New York Times, 'The Democrats will spin and spin.'

Excuse us? Where is the Republican convention scheduled? Uh, New York?...

It was the Bush administration, remember, that resisted mightily the creation of this commission and then appointed the wildly inappropriate Henry Kissinger to be its chair. When Kissinger was forced to withdraw for a gazillion conflicts of interest, the well-respected Tom Kean, former governor of New Jersey and a Republican, took over.

Then the Bush White House proceeded to stonewall, not turning over documents until subpoenaed.

But why? Do they know something about the runup to Sept. 11 that we don't know? More...

Letter to the Editor: Media assertions that George W. Bush has no opponent in the New Hampshire Republican primary are false. Several Republicans are on the ballot next week; of all, John Buchanan makes the case against Bush clearly and convincingly.

Buchanan won't be the Republican nominee for president, but he represents a large number of moderate Republicans who are dismayed with Bush's policies and his consistent pattern of lying to the American people. I have sent Buchanan a contribution through his Web site, johnbuchanan.org, to help him get more media attention to further make his candidacy known. Click on his blog when you visit his site. He updates it daily and it's very interesting.

By Jillian Jonas
UPI National Political Analyst
Published 1/25/2004 11:01 AM

NEW YORK, Jan. 25 (UPI) -- While much of the nation focuses on the horserace in New Hampshire's upcoming Democratic presidential primaries, few Americans realize that 14 individuals are running to challenge President George Bush in the Republican primary.

'Three types of candidates run in New Hampshire...There are the very principled kind, the ones who take running very seriously, running across the political spectrum. There are the kinds who are running as a goof. And then, there are those who are unhinged.'

Republican and 'citizen's candidate' John Buchanan, is probably a little of all three.

Originally running as the '9/11 Truth Candidate,' Buchanan is perhaps best known for being the journalist who uncovered, among other things, supposed evidence of war profiteering by the Bush and Harriman families with companies doing illegal business with the Nazis." More...

All US airline passengers to undergo government background checks

All US Airline Passengers to Undergo Government Background Checks
By Jamie Chapman
21 January 2004

The US Transportation Security Agency (TSA) gave the go-ahead last week to a new screening system for airline passengers. The Computer Assisted Passenger PreScreening program, known as CAPPS 2, involves a two-stage process for determining who will be subject to additional security checks at airports, and who will be denied the right to fly altogether...

Although dozens of peace activists and other opponents of the Bush administration have found themselves caught up in the "do-not-fly" lists, up until now the government has claimed that only suspected terrorists were tracked. Now, however, the TSA has expanded the list to include supposedly violent criminals. The TSA has not said whether a conviction or simply an arrest will earn someone a place on the list, nor exactly what crimes are considered violent.

This expansion of the list has the effect of making the detention of a passenger seem more routine and even justified. Anyone targeted, either mistakenly or strictly for their political activities, will be even more isolated as they are being led away, since they will be assumed to be a common criminal...

9-11 is No Reason to Suspend the Constitution
By Floyd J. McKay
Seattle Times
January 24, 2004

EXCERPT
"What is frightening about the Guantanamo cases is not just the lack of legal protections -- they are, after all, not American citizens -- but the attitude of the Justice Department. Solicitor General Theodore Olson, Justice's point man before the court, contends that 'The courts have no jurisdiction to evaluate or second-guess the conduct of the president and the military.'

That language, even discounting for legal hyperbole, should concern every American who cares about checks and balances.

Essentially, the government is saying in these cases and others that 9-11 suspended the Constitution, and did so for all time, not just the immediate future.

The nub of the Justice argument is that this is wartime, and the president has unusual powers in wartime. Granted, that has always been the case. But even a genuine declared war (the last time Congress declared a war was Dec. 8, 1941) still leaves a role for checks on presidential power.

Bush has used 9-11 to set himself above the law. Unlike World War II or other declared wars, this is a 'war' without end.. What president is going to declare 'Mission Accomplished' on the deck of the USS Lincoln, only to have some loony set off a bomb in the subway? Not likely -- we will be fighting a 'war on terrorism' for the rest of our natural lives." More...

9/11 Panel Unlikely to Get Later Deadline
-- Hearings Being Scaled Back to Finish Work by May
By Dan Eggen, Washington Post, January 19, 2004

"President Bush and House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) have decided to oppose granting more time to an independent commission investigating the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, virtually guaranteeing that the panel will have to complete its work by the end of May, officials said last week.

"A growing number of commission members had concluded that the panel needs more time to prepare a thorough and credible accounting of missteps leading to the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. But the White House and leading Republicans have informed the panel that they oppose any delay, which raises the possibility that Sept. 11-related controversies could emerge during the heat of the presidential campaign...

Scalia, Cheney Hunting Together Raises Questions
By David G. Savage
Los Angeles Times
January 17, 2004

WASHINGTON - Vice President Dick Cheney and Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia spent part of last week duck hunting together at a private camp in south Louisiana, just three weeks after the Supreme Court agreed to take up an appeal by the vice president in lawsuits over his handling of the administration's energy task force.

Several experts in legal ethics questioned the timing of their trip and said it raises doubts about Scalia's ability to judge the case impartially.

But Scalia rejected that concern Friday, saying, "I do not think my impartiality could reasonably be questioned."

"American Dynasty": Family Lies
By MICHAEL ORESKES
January 18, 2004

"If Howard Dean (or any other Democrat) is elected president of the United States this year, he (or she) will owe a debt of gratitude to Kevin Phillips. This may seem improbable. Phillips is, of course, legendary for his blueprint of Republican hegemony, ''The Emerging Republican Majority,'' published in 1969...

''I didn't like the Bushes when I was involved in G.O.P. politics before their two presidencies,'' he acknowledges at the end of his latest book. ''And now I better understand why.'' He is referring to the 333 preceding pages of ''American Dynasty: Aristocracy, Fortune, and the Politics of Deceit in the House of Bush,'' a compendium of evils that he says have been handed down for four generations in the Bush family...

"George W. Bush's great-grandfathers, Samuel P. Bush and George H. Walker, assembled wealth and power by exploiting ties to Wall Street, arms merchants, the American intelligence apparatus and foreign dictators including Hitler. That wealth and power, and those connections, are why Bush is president today, Phillips says, and why his policies are what they are." More...
"A New Pearl Harbor" by John Pilger

"A New Pearl Harbor"
by John Pilger
The Guardian/UK, 12/12/02

"Two years ago a project set up by the men who now surround George W Bush said what America needed was 'a new Pearl Harbor'. Its published aims have, alarmingly, come true."

"The threat posed by US terrorism to the security of nations and individuals was outlined in prophetic detail in a document written more than two years ago and disclosed only recently. What was needed for America to dominate much of humanity and the world's resources, it said, was 'some catastrophic and catalysing event - like a new Pearl Harbor'. The attacks of 11 September 2001 provided the 'new Pearl Harbor', described as 'the opportunity of ages'. The extremists who have since exploited 11 September come from the era of Ronald Reagan, when far-right groups and 'think-tanks' were established to avenge the American 'defeat' in Vietnam. In the 1990s, there was an added agenda: to justify the denial of a 'peace dividend' following the cold war. The Project for the New American Century was formed, along with the American Enterprise Institute, the Hudson Institute and others that have since merged the ambitions of the Reagan administration with those of the current Bush regime.

One of George W Bush's 'thinkers' is Richard Perle. I interviewed Perle when he was advising Reagan; and when he spoke about 'total war', I mistakenly dismissed him as mad. He recently used the term again in describing America's 'war on terror'. 'No stages,' he said. 'This is total war. We are fighting a variety of enemies. There are lots of them out there. All this talk about first we are going to do Afghanistan, then we will do Iraq... this is entirely the wrong way to go about it. If we just let our vision of the world go forth, and we embrace it entirely and we don't try to piece together clever together clever diplomacy, but just wage a total war... our children will sing great songs about us years from now." Cheney's grim vision: decades of war

>> Prescription for an Awakening:
>> Read these two paragraphs below.

"Of all the enemies to public liberty, war is, perhaps, the most to be dreaded, because it comprises and develops the germ of every other. War is the parent of armies; from these proceed debts and taxes; and armies, and debts, and taxes are the known instruments for bringing the many under the domination of the few… No nation could preserve its freedom in the midst of continual warfare."

-- James Madison, 4th President of the US, 1793

Cheney's Grim Vision: Decades of War
James Sterngold,
San Francisco Chronicle
January 15, 2004

Los Angeles -- In a forceful preview of the Bush administration's expansionist military policies in this election year, Vice President Dick Cheney Wednesday painted a grim picture of what he said was the growing threat of a catastrophic terrorist attack in the United States and warned that the battle, like the Cold War, could last generations... Cheney devoted the half-hour speech to a frightening characterization of the war on terrorism and the new kind of mobilization he said it demanded. He sounded the alarm about the increasing prospects of a major new terrorist attack and the extraordinary responses that are required. While many of his remarks echoed past comments by the president and senior officials, Cheney struck a surprisingly dour note and suggested only an administration of proven ability could manage the dramatic overhaul necessary for the nation's security apparatus. As the winter of 2002 approached, I was increasingly amazed at the success of the propaganda campaign being waged by President Bush, Vice President Cheney, and neoconservative mouthpieces at the Washington Times and Wall Street Journal. Have You Forgotten 9-11?

Have You Forgotten 9-11?
by an anonymous Buzzflash reader
January 15, 2004

Whenever many of us question Bush's leadership, the necessity of the Iraq war or the direction of the war on terrorism we, are invariably asked, 'Have you forgotten 9-11?'

Americans will never forget 9-11, and many of us have images seared on our memories of that day and the following days that REQUIRE us to question the administrations actions since 9-11.

I will never forget that Bush was warned in August 2001 that Al Qaeda was planning a major attack, but did nothing.

I will never forget that after being informed of the second Tower being hit, Bush sat in a classroom in Florida for twenty minutes while people were dying in New York and did nothing.

I will never forget that both towers could have been cleared after the first plane hit if Bush had issued orders based on the warnings he'd gotten the previous month.

I will never forget that no planes were scrambled to protect New York or Washington even though the FAA and NORAD knew within minutes that four planes had been hijacked.

I will never forget that days after 9-11, members of the Saudi royal family and the Bin Laden family without being questioned were allowed to leave a locked-down America.

I will never forget that no 9-11 air traffic controllers have ever been interviewed by our supposedly free press.

I will never forget the testimony of Colleen Rowley.

I will never forget that NO ONE has lost his job or been held responsible for the failures of 9-11.

I will never forget that 9-11 widow Ellen Mariani has bravely filed a lawsuit against Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and Ashcroft under the RICO act and her press conference was not covered by any major US media outlets, newspapers or TV news.

No, I will never forget what happened on 9-11.

"In the view of the notable historian William Shirer and many others, it has been established 'beyond a reasonable doubt' that on Feb. 27, 1933, a team of Hitler's commandos fanned out through the Reichstag building (the German parliament), using incendiary fluids to quickly touch off a massive blaze. Before the fire had died down, Hitler proclaimed that the outrage must have been the responsibility of the Communists. Apparently, by and large, the German public believed Hitler was telling the truth: the Enabling Act was passed giving Hitler a dictator's powers...

"The events of 911 were [likewise] orchestrated to create feelings of fear and helplessness in the face of surprise attack -- fears which were later exploited by the Bush administration's imagery that the moribund Iraqi nuclear weapons program could be restarted and then unveiled by a mushroom cloud over a US city." Now in the absence of a meaningful Iraqi role in the 9/11 attack and the mysterious disappearance of those fearsome Weapons of Mass Destruction, there might be some psychic satisfaction to be had in saying, ?I told you so!? But it sure isn?t doing my career as a talk-show host any good." More...
Ex-Aide Paul O'Neill: Bush Planned Iraq Invasion Before 9/11
"The Bush Administration began laying plans for an invasion of Iraq, including the use of American troops, within days of President Bush's inauguration in January of 2001 -- not eight months later after the 9/11 attacks as has been previously reported. " Key Bush quote here: "FIND ME A WAY TO DO THIS."

How incredibly "convenient" was 9/11? You connect the dots...
911 International Inquiry

Our campaign is hardly the only effort fighting for 9/11 truth and justice. A large group of citizens have been working quietly on the West coast and in Europe and are getting ready to go quite public on the 26th of March with the first "9/11 International Inquiry - Phase 1" (Phase II will open in Toronto in July). Read their Preamble below, visit their site, and help spread the word.

"Whereas the tragic events of 9-11 have been used by the United States government to justify a war upon the world, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights;

"Whereas the Joint House and Senate Inquiry of September 11, 2001 and the Independent National Commission on Terrorist Attacks have not served to “reveal the truth about the events of September 11, 2001,” but to justify increasing the power of the National Security State;

"Whereas the mass-circulation press in the United States has failed to ask the most basic questions about what actually happened on September 11, 2001, and has supported the extension of U.S. military might throughout the world;

"We, who question the official narrative of September 11, 2001, and question the path the U.S. government has chosen in its wake, believe a public inquiry-- asking who, what, how, when and why -- into those events is vitally necessary. Therefore, this Inquiry intends to bring together, to share what they have learned with the world, independent researchers, questioners, seekers of evidence, authors, film-makers: all those who desire and work to discover the truth about September 11, 2001."
