Conservative Columnist Excoriates Bush

In an op-ed in today's Washington Post, David Boaz of the Cato Institute, calls Bush out as a faux-conservative.
Here's a sample: "Conservatives used to believe that the U.S. Constitution set up a government of strictly limited powers. That's what lots of voters assumed they would get with Bush. But that's not what voters got. His more libertarian-minded voters are taken aback to discover that 'compassionate conservatism' turned out to mean social conservatism -- a stepped-up drug war, restrictions on medical research, antigay policies, federal subsidies for marriage and religion -- and big-spending liberalism justified as 'compassion.'"

Cato Institute Opposes Bush Medicare Bill
Cato's director of health and welfare studies Michael Tanner said, "Today's passage of the Medicare prescription drug bill represents a return to 1960's Great Society-style big government. Congress has failed in its responsibility to reform Medicare, choosing instead to simply throw money at the problem. It is our children and grandchildren who will bear the cost of this massive new entitlement program."

The Heritage Foundation opposes Bush on Medicare too
"A new prescription drug benefit and Medicare expansion:
Adds $2 trillion to Medicare's shortfall, creates a huge new tax on working Americans, threatens the Bush tax cuts (state-by-state numbers), and wrongly calls the "demonstration project" reform"
Real Conservatives oppose Bush's Patriot Act
Nevada conservative activist Janine Hansen, president of the Nevada Eagle Forum is leading a group of leading conservatives who are opposed to the Patriot Act.

Others include: Paul Weyrich of the Free Congress Foundation, Grover Norquist of Americans for Tax Reform, David Keane of the American Conservative Union and Phyllis Schlafly of the Eagle Forum
"We all want to continue to fight and win the war against terrorism, but there is absolutely no need to sacrifice civil liberties," said Bob Barr, a former congressman who works with the ACU and ACLU.
